MADELEINE DE PROUST

  AN INTIMATE JOURNEY THROUGH MEMORIES

The idea takes its name from Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time, where the taste of a madeleine dipped in tea unexpectedly awakens an entire world of childhood memories. Since then, a “Madeleine de Proust” has come to describe that sudden, sensory return to a deeply personal memory.

For a milestone birthday in Madrid, I imagined a personal “Madeleine de Proust” for each of the 20 guests. Through intimate research, I brought a cherished memory back to life through taste, fragrance, music, images and words.

One of my most heartfelt creations, and one that inspired some of the most moving responses I have ever received.

Memories brought to life

When a memory becomes an experience

Today I experienced one of the most powerful and wonderful

sensory experiences imaginable.

A photograph of my grandparents, Beethoven’s Clair de lune played

at the piano for four hands, a napkin scented with a drop of Diorissimo,

and a consommé with egg yolk and sherry filled my eyes with tears

and transported me back to a happy moment.

Perhaps this is what cooking is about: evoking memories and awakening sensations.
